Posts for March 2008

Question of the day (or year).

Mar21
Today is perfect. Per usual. Sunny and beautiful and it's Friday and I'm just so excited for another amazing LA weekend. Per always. So this weekend is full of fun stuff...

Friday, March 21st: Friday's off the 405 at the Getty.
This is by far one of the coolest events I have attended in LA. Not much explanation needed besides a free show in the courtyard at the Getty, bars, and sunset. Done. Tonight features the band Something in Spanish, an experimental/avant-garde group from Brooklyn. From getty.edu:

Leave it to songbird Michelle Perez, jazz cat Jules Monterey, and visual artist Ari Kuschnir to effortlessly blend ear-popping beats with eye-popping visuals. Something in Spanish offers a little something for everyone—from straight-up rump-shakin' dance music to relaxing melodies you can chill to. It's a whole lotta show with a tinge of glow.

Later this evening, I would love to check out Ronna & Beverlys's All Jew Review at UCB. Tonight's guests inlcude Jerry O'Connell and Adam McKay (director: Anchorman, Talladega Nights). However, I don't think there are enough hours in the day.

Our network is down at work right now, here is what I am thinking about:
-The Hollywood Bowl just annouced the 5-show Concert Series. Check it out if you have any plans of going to some shows at this wonderful venue.
-The band Neon Neon.
-Outside Lands festival in SF. Yes Radiohead.
-Good Magazine is great.

That's all for now. Time to work.

Real Life Musicals

Mar11
I've always been a fan of musicals. Rent, The Producers, Wicked, Mama Mia, Aida...I know, they were great. But like many others I've always thought about how ridiculous it would be if people really started to just break into song and dance while in the midst of their daily chores and duties. These people from the group Improv Everywhere tested it out....

How I'd love to spend the rest of my week

Mar05

Wednesday March 5th -
The Duke Spirit at the Echo. UK-Alternative/Soul/Punk band. The new album has receivew some great reviews, I like it and it kind of follows a sea theme.

Thursday March 6th -
LA Green Drinks - Culver City

Friday March 7th -
The Passion of the Bike - Midnight Ridazz ride in honor of everyone's favorite racial-slur yelling asshole. Here's the deal:
We'll start in front of the bike shop on the boardwalk just south of the Santa Monica pier (in the "old muscle beach" behind lowes). From there we'll ride up the bike path and then take the PCH up the coast to Moonshadows where we'll share in a commemorative toast. After that, we'll turn around and head back down the PCH to Santa Monica's main st where we'll bar hop our way to abbott kinney, then down venice bl to the boardwalk where we'll head back up to our starting point for tipsy playtime on the gym equipment in the sand.

I went on my first midnight ridazz ride a few weeks ago. Ridiculous.

Saturday March 8th
Create:Fixate - Group art show, music and drinks in a warehouse downtown. I went to the show in December and it was excellent.

Blinky the Friendly Hen - 30th Anniversary - Art exhibition and opening and reception at the Track 16 Gallery in Bergamot Station in Santa Monica.

Lest I forget some bike rides and maybe surfing given the fact that it's supposed to remain in the 70s for the remainder of the week.

Lot's more shows and residencies I'm looking forward to in March...more later.

LA Marathon

Mar05
Joey kicked ass in the marathon. There were 27,000-ish people running and 1 million watching. How I found Joey on Mile 19 baffles me. I rode my bike throughout the course, there were some really scenic views and I thought it was very cool seeing some areas of downtown that I may have never seen otherwise. Not to mention weather was beautiful.

FIXED ON SOBRIETY

Mar04
I read that title on the midnight ridazz site and I found it really fitting for some reason.

Retox is off to a great start. So great that I think I'm ready to start detoxing again. If I could turn the last week into a Berenstain Bears book it would be titled "The Berenstain Bears Get Rewarded for Bad Behavior".
Cat Power at the Wiltern was excellent. Chan Marshall is still on the list of people I wouldn't mind being.

Thursday and Friday were a warm up for the Urban Iditorad on Saturday. I'm not even sure how to describe it besides the best day ever. So here are some highlights:
-Hundreds of stolen shopping carts rushing down the streets from Venice to Santa Monica.
-I'd like to say we had the best carts ever, not only because they were the biggest and baddest (one was from Costco and the other from Home Depot - and it had seats) but also because we had a keg hiding under a tarp in there. Mobile keg stands anyone?
Boone's (death wish). Cabo. Venice Canals. Getting lost. Grassy knoll beachside party. Helicopters? SWAT Team. Franzia bladders. Tomatoes. Wine towers. Lost cell phones. Cameras. Money. And dignity. Naps. Brittania. Gang bangs. And doing it all over again.

Here is an excellent video:
